In honor of World Coastal Cleanup Day on September 20th 2025, Oceanpick led a major coastal cleanup campaign at the Back-Bay coastal area in Trincomalee. The initiative brought together Trincomalee government authorities, enthusiastic students from Eastern University, and Oceanpick’s dedicated team to combat plastic pollution and restore the natural beauty of this important coastal zone.

This was a Community Effort for a Global Cause. More than 100 participants actively joined the cleanup, dedicating over two hours collecting and responsibly disposing of significant amounts of plastic waste, fishing gear remnants, and other pollutants threatening marine life. The collaboration between the private sector, local government, and academia highlighted the power of collective action in addressing environmental challenges.

Eastern University students were actively engaged, not only in the cleanup but also in raising awareness about the long-term importance of waste reduction and coastal preservation. The event also served as an educational platform, inspiring the next generation of leaders to become guardians of Sri Lanka’s marine ecosystems. Students experienced firsthand the impact of plastic pollution, learning how simple everyday actions—like reducing single-use plastics—can safeguard marine life and coastal habitats.

The initiative was further strengthened by the active participation of the District Secretariat Office, Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA), Cinepress Club members from Trincomalee Eastern Campus, Negombo Recycling Club of Sri Lanka (NRC), and the Ceylon Fisheries Harbor Corporation (CFHC — Codbay). Their contributions highlighted the importance of multi-stakeholder partnerships in addressing environmental challenges.

World Coastal Cleanup Day is a global movement observed across more than 100 countries, focused on tackling marine debris and protecting vulnerable coastal ecosystems. Plastic pollution is one of the greatest threats to oceans today, with devastating impacts on marine life, fisheries, tourism, and coastal communities.

By participating in this global movement, Oceanpick demonstrated its belief that Sustainability Begins Locally. The company’s partnership with Trincomalee authorities and Eastern University reflects a shared vision: safeguarding oceans not only for today but for generations to come.

  • This clean up supports reduction of plastic and non-biodegradable waste,
  • protection of marine life and aquaculture zones,
  • youth engagement in environmental stewardship,
  • strengthened collaboration with local authorities and academic institutions

Because every piece of plastic removed today creates space for marine life tomorrow.

Our Goal is to make Cod-bay 100% plastic-free—where every fish harvested reflects the purity of its environment. Through community engagement, ocean and beach cleanups, and zero-plastic aquaculture practices, ‘Plastic Free Cod-bay’ is our promise of purity, sustainability, and traceability—one bay at a time.”
