WHY FARM FISH?

Fish are the only wild animals still hunted commercially. As a result, wild fish populations have had to endure the brunt of the human demand for protein, and have suffered overfishing and environmental damage. Fish farming is the process of raising fish in an enclosed area for commercial purposes. A fish farm can be built on land, over naturally occurring water bodies like lakes, or in the open ocean. Fish farming is an alternative to fishing and, potentially, the future of seafood.

WHAT IS OCEAN FARMING?

Open ocean aquaculture (OOA), or mariculture, is the process of raising fish or crustaceans in open sea pens for commercial purposes. These sites can be close to shore, or over 300km offshore. Unlike land-based pond farms, ocean farms provide a more natural and sustainable environment for the farmed fish and crustaceans.

WHY IS OCEAN FARMING MORE SUSTAINABLE THAN POND FARMING?

Farming fish and crustaceans in land-based ponds uses scarce land and freshwater resources, while ocean-farming, or mariculture, offers boundless potential to meet future demands for seafood, and to feed vulnerable populations with little environmental impact.

WHY FARM BARRAMUNDI?

Barramundi is high in nutrition and low in calories, it is tasty, but mild in flavour. It is a healthy enough for regular consumption, and versatile enough for a range of diverse, cuisines. It’s an all-round superfish.

WHERE IS BARRAMUNDI NATIVE TO?

Barramundi takes its name from an indigenous Australian dialect, but is found throughout the tropical belt of the Indian Ocean and eastern Pacific.
